What is Vitiligo ?

Vitiligo is also known as 'Leucoderma' in India, it is considered as a social stigma. Vitiligo is appearance of single or multiple depigmented patches on any part of the body. These patches gradually increase in size & cause lot of psychological stress in the patient. It is an auto-immune condition and may have a genetic predisposition.

The cause is typically unknown. It is believed to be due to genetic susceptibility that is triggered by an environmental factor such that an autoimmune disease occurs. This results in the destruction of skin pigment cells. Risk factors include a family history of the condition or other autoimmune diseases, such as hyperthyroidism, alopecia areata, and pernicious anemia. It is not contagious.

Vitiligo is classified into two main types: segmental and non-segmental. Most cases are non-segmental, meaning they affect both sides; and these cases typically get worse with time. About 10% of cases are segmental, meaning they mostly involve one side of the body and these cases do not typically worsen with time. Diagnosis can be confirmed by tissue biopsy.

Treatment of vitiligo usually takes a long time. Medical treatment helps arrest the spread of depigmentation and in some cases, may bring back the pigmentation. In majority of cases LASER / LIGHT THERAPY is helpful in treating vitiligo, in getting repigmentation. However, repigmentation in cases of stable vitiligo can be achieved by various dermatosurgical techniques.

Who can undergo the treatment ?

All Vitiligo patients can undergo the treatment. However, patients with facial, neck, arm and trunk patches are ideal candidates for this treatment. Patients with old age, uncontrolled diabetes and those with involvement of more than 60% of the body surface are discouraged from treatments.

Which Treatment is ideal ?

No one treatment is ideal. Each individual treatment has its own benefits and disadvantages. The ideal treatment is a combination of different modalities. This combination therapy is customized depending upon the age, duration, type of Vitiligo, area and extent of the disease.

Is the treatment permanent ?

No treatment is necessarily permanent. Depending on the prognosis, the remission period may vary. De-pigmentation of the treated area may not occur for a long period of time or in some cases the treatment is even permanent.
